Our history dates back to 2004 when Allan Brown founded a new healthcare real estate development company (then called Trophy Healthcare Realty) with three other real estate professionals. Within a couple of years, healthcare real estate veterans Kathy de la Vergne and Scott Walker had joined Brown, and their shared obsession with excellence in healthcare real estate led to a restructured partnership and a name change to Prevarian.
What happened next was a departure from multi-tenant real estate, and a focus on what truly set us apart – our credibility in and knowledge of the development of post-acute care hospitals – Inpatient Rehabilitation, Long Term Acute Care, and Behavioral Health. These single-tenant facilities were specialized and generally avoided by most developers. Success requires an innate understanding of the business, and knowledge of the specialized nature of these buildings, their equipment, and how they work best for providers. Our relationships with hospitals and healthcare systems around the U.S. and our unique focus on these specialized facilities contributed to the rapid growth of the young company. Today, we “build to suit” these post-acute care hospitals for both operator-tenants, and for owner-operators who rely upon our expertise to deploy their building programs.
Prevarian Senior Living launched in 2009, and Dodd Crutcher formally joined the firm as a partner in 2010. The new company established itself with the development of an Assisted Living and Memory Care community in Round Rock, TX. Today, Prevarian and their partners own both the operating business and the real estate and work with experienced third-party operators that commit to co-investment in each community.
In our Assisted Living and Memory Care communities in Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, and Arizona, Prevarian has aligned or partnered with local healthcare systems because of how the communities bring value as a part of the post-acute care continuum.
Prevarian has been fortunate to win a few awards and the recognition of our peers – see our properties pages (Healthcare, Senior Communities) – but we are most proud of the amazing environments for healthcare and eldercare that have come out of the extraordinary relationships we’ve fostered and the team members with whom we’ve worked, as well as the successful outcomes that our partners, tenants, patients, and residents have realized.
We are optimistic about the future of our industry, and honored to be a part of its evolution.
